A law passed by Congress in 2006 could catch a lot of television viewers off guard in 2009.
Television stations must switch their broadcasting from the old analog format to a more modern digital format by February 17, 2009.
The change will affect viewers who use rooftop or rabbit ears antennas to watch television. They will need to upgrade before then to continue to get a television signal.
[BEGIN OPTIONAL TRIM]
The switch to digital television will mean crystal clear pictures and sound, and will free up the airwaves for a variety of new services.
But while upgrading is easy, viewers will need to follow one of three simple steps to make the switch to digital television.
That means, either buying a new television set with a digital tuner, purchasing a DTV converter box which will be on the shelves next year, or hooking up to a pay TV service.
